Body follies

We had an unexpectedly chilly weekend and I turned the central heat on a few times. This morning, I woke up with a split lip, a bloody nose and aching sinuses. Dry air much?

Also this morning, G had an adolescent complexion crisis. She came up to me in the kitchen, pulled her hair back and said "Look at this!"

"Hmm, looks like a breakout," I said.

"What do I do?! I don't have enough concealer to cover all that!"

"Well, there's not much you can do," I said. "You can't wear a whole face full of makeup, so you've just kind of got to deal. I'm sorry."

"Isn't there anything that can help?" she moaned.

"We can try buying some tinted moisturizer after I pick you up tonight," I offered. "That might cover it a little without looking all heavy like foundation. I know it sucks, but the reality is that for the next few years, breaking out is going to be a fact of life for you."

"I didn't know it was going to be this bad," she said as she went away to try artfully draping her hair over her forehead.

I didn't have the heart to tell her it can get a lot worse!

oh that sucks! I've noticed a few bumps around Cat's nose, but so far nothing that she's commented on. My husband had HORRIBLE acne for over 10 years so I worry for her, but hopefully my dry skin gene prevails. (I got some really nice tinted moisture from Sephora. Let me know if you can't find one you like.)

P had really severe acne as a teenager too; a lot of boys seem to. I'm hoping G escapes (she's had some blemishes here and there for a year or so, but nothing out of the ordinary) but I'm ready to take her to a dermatologist if it starts looking bad. I remember P saying when she was little that he would do that right away if she needed it--he didn't want her to go through the misery he did.

Oh my gosh, I am going through this right now with my 11.5 year old. She is breaking out like crazy on her forehead no matter what I try. We've bought various acne creams and lotions to no avail. She is mortified by it. I feel really bad. I didn't have acne until I was about 18.

I never really had much acne either-at any given time, I probably had a blemish or two at some stage of the zit life cycle, but I didn't have major breakouts. My best friend in junior high did, though, and I remember her saying that the dermatologist told her to change her pillowcase every night and sleep with her hair pulled off her face. Maybe that will help? (I had G pin her bangs back before bed tonight, just to try it.) I'm hoping it will be a little easier for them when they get a little older and more of their friends are dealing with the same thing.
